Does Back 40 only rent in kits?
Yes, we offer rentals in pre-made kits. Our kits are curated and packed based on the type of rental (backpacking, car camping, or concert camping), however, individual items may be added. We are open to creating custom kits at our discretion. We also honor large group orders.
What are the rental terms? (length of rental, cost)
Whatever you need! We can rent from one night to multi-week trips. Each rental duration is based on the number of nights you will be ‘using’ the gear, starting with a minimum cost of 3 nights. Trips longer than 7 nights are subject to custom pricing to get you the best deal.
How does Back 40 distribute the gear?
We offer self-serve pick up from drop boxes located in Kent and South Seattle. This is convenient for locals and travelers alike. And some of our drop boxes are even at breweries! Delivery is possible, for a prearranged charge. Orders needed within 24 hours may not be eligible for delivery.
How do I find out what’s available?
The first step is to fill out our "Inquire Now" form to let us know what you need, when you want to pick it up, and how long you plan to use it. A Back 40 team member will contact you within 1-3 business days to confirm if we have the kit you need available. (If rental is within 24 hours, we will do our best to accommodate your request.)
How do I pay for the gear?
Once your order has been confirmed as available (via our online form), you will purchase your kit from an invoice sent to your email address from Back 40. Your full payment of the equipment rental is your reservation. We use PayPal (a secure payment system) which accepts all major credit cards.
What is the cancellation policy?
As long as Back 40 is notified of your desire to cancel your order in writing (email) 14 days or more from the date of your first rental night, you will receive a refund minus 5% cancellation fee, sent back to you from our PayPal system. If Back 40 is notified in fewer than 14 days from the date of your first rental night, a fee will be assessed at 30% of the total rental cost.
What about clothes, food, toiletries, sunscreen, etc?
You are responsible for these types of items. This is mainly because of preferences and allergies. We do have our favorites though and can offer suggestions.
What if I don’t know where to go?
No problem! Our team has a strong understanding of the area and we can suggest great destinations based on the type of scenery and experience you’re looking for. (We make no skill level assumptions.)
